How Can Business People Immigrate To Canada?

Business persons can immigrate to Canada through federal or provincial programs.

Mainly, there are four options for prospective business immigrants (1) buy or establish a new business in one of the provinces under local business streams (PNPs), (2) build and scale an innovative business with the support of a Canadian designated organization (Startup Visa Program – CSUV), (3) continue self-employment in cultural activities or athletics in Canada (Self-employed Persons Program – SEPP). (4) The fourth option is for intra-company transferees/business owners. It generally exists for owners of multinational corporations with a Canadian subsidiary, which they have managed as an intra-company transferee and eventually can gain Canadian permanent residence.

Provincial Business/Investor Programs (PNPs)
Canadian provinces and territories have their own immigration programs "streams" through which they target business people (PNPs [Provincial Nominee Programs]). Prospective business immigrants with a sufficiently high score, necessary skills, education, business work experience, and viable business concept will be invited to establish and operate a business concept in the province. This process is normally happening through several stages of (1) expressing interest to apply under the provincial business immigration program, (2) acceptance to the program and applying for a work permit, (3) establishing and operating a business, (4) getting a provincial nomination for permanent residence, and (5) applying for permanent residence to IRCC [Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada]. Federal Startup Visa Program (SUV)
Business persons with an innovative business idea supported by one of the designated Canadian organizations can apply for permanent residence under Startup Business Class. A team of up to five people can apply for permanent residence under the SUV program. All essential applicants can come to work on the innovative project while their permanent residence applications are being processed. Federal Self-Employed Persons Program (SEPP)
Entrepreneurs having at least two years of experience in arts, cultural activities, or athletics can immigrate to Canada under the Self-Employed Persons Program. These business people must have the ability and intention to be self-employed in the same industry sectors in Canada. From Intra-Corporate Transferee to Permanent Resident
Business owners of multinational corporations have the opportunity to establish and manage an affiliated company in Canada (branch or subsidiary). They can apply for an Intra-Company Transfer Work Permit to establish and manage the corporation's office in Canada. After the business owner/transferee launches the Canadian subsidiary and makes it fully operational, they may be eligible to apply for permanent residence to continue managing this business. Canadian subsidiary will have to extend a permanent job offer. Want to learn more about an Intra-Company Transfer Work Permit?
